The hard part is rarely the connection. It is deciding the source of truth for each field, what happens when a record exists in both systems with different values, how failures are retried, and how you will know when something has silently stopped. Those decisions belong in writing before development starts, because they are business decisions wearing technical clothes.

Where it fits in a build

Every organisation running more than a handful of applications has integration work waiting. The question is whether it is done deliberately, or accumulated as spreadsheets and copy-paste.

Common mistakes

• Two-way sync without a clear owner per field, which produces data that flips back and forth.
• No monitoring, so an integration that stopped three weeks ago is discovered by a customer.
• Treating integration as a one-off project rather than something that needs maintenance as both ends change.
