What is a proof of concept?

A good PoC is aimed at the single riskiest assumption — can the model read these documents accurately enough, can this system be integrated at all, will this run inside the latency budget — and it is finished when that assumption is confirmed or disproved. Two weeks is often enough. If it is running into a second month, it has quietly become a build.

Where it fits in a build

Run one when a no answer would change the plan. Skip it when the technique is well established and the real risk is scope or adoption, which a PoC cannot test.

Common mistakes

• Demonstrating on curated sample data, which proves nothing about the real inputs.
• Letting the throwaway code become the foundation because it works and time is short.
• No written criterion, so the result is argued over rather than acted on.
