ERPs are strict for a good reason: the accounts depend on them. That makes them a poor place for experimental automation and a good place to read from. A common, sound pattern is to build the fast-moving operational layer outside the ERP and write back only the settled, validated result.

Where it fits in a build

Integrate with it where the financial truth lives. Build around it where the work is operational, changes often, or involves people outside finance.

Common mistakes

• Writing directly to ERP tables instead of using its supported interfaces, which bypasses validation nobody documented.
• Assuming the ERP data is clean because it is in the ERP.
• Designing a process that needs an ERP change before it can start, which will not happen this year.
