In practice
In practice it means giving each operation a key derived from the event rather than from the moment it ran, recording which keys have been processed, and checking before acting. It is a small amount of work at design time and an expensive retrofit once duplicates are already in the data.
Where it fits in a build
Anywhere retries exist — which is everywhere that involves a network. Payments, order creation, email sending, CRM writes and document generation all deserve it.
Common mistakes
- Relying on the sender never retrying, which is not a guarantee anyone gives.
- Using a timestamp as the key, which changes on every retry and defeats the purpose.
- Deduplicating in memory, which forgets everything when the process restarts.
