In practice
The benefit is real when content genuinely feeds more than one destination or when the front end needs a framework the CMS cannot host. The cost is that things a traditional CMS gives free — preview, page layout, redirects, forms, search — become your responsibility to build. For a single marketing website edited by non-technical staff, that trade is usually poor value.
Where it fits in a build
Good fit for multi-channel content, product catalogues feeding several surfaces, or a development team that already owns the front end. Poor fit for a brochure site with one editor.
Common mistakes
- Choosing headless for performance, when caching a traditional CMS achieves the same result far more cheaply.
- Underestimating the editor experience, which decides whether anyone keeps the content current.
- Forgetting preview, so nobody can see a change before it is live.
