In practice
Laboratory scores and field data disagree constantly, and field data is the one that counts. Real visitors are on slower devices and worse networks than the machine the site was built on. Responsiveness is the metric most sites now fail, and the usual cause is too much JavaScript competing for the main thread when someone taps.
Where it fits in a build
Relevant to every public site. Most relevant where mobile traffic is high and the competition is close, because it is one of the few ranking factors a site owner can directly control.
Common mistakes
- Optimising a laboratory score while real visitors see something worse.
- Loading third-party scripts — chat, analytics, tag managers — without measuring what each one costs.
- Images without dimensions, which is the commonest cause of layout shift.
