What is an API?

An API is a defined way for one system to ask another for data or to perform an action, without a person or a screen in between. A REST API exposes those operations over the web at predictable addresses with predictable responses, which is what makes reliable integration possible.

When evaluating software, the API is a commercial question, not a technical detail. Ask what it covers, whether it is included in your tier, what the rate limits are, whether there are webhooks for events, and how breaking changes are announced. A product with a weak or paywalled API will cost you later in exactly the place you cannot predict.

Where it fits in a build

Anything you intend to automate around needs one. If a vendor cannot show you documentation, assume integration will mean screen automation, and price it accordingly.

Common mistakes

  • Discovering after purchase that the API is a paid add-on or covers only a fraction of the product.
  • Building against undocumented endpoints found in a browser inspector, which change without notice.
  • Ignoring rate limits until a bulk import takes a week.
