What is data residency?

In practice

It is easy to satisfy for the database and easy to overlook everywhere else: backups, logs, error reporting, analytics, email delivery, support tooling and any AI model called over an API. A residency commitment is only as good as the least considered of those. For AI features specifically, whether prompts leave the region is a design decision, not a setting.

Where it fits in a build

Frequently mandatory for government, healthcare, financial services and some EU and Gulf contracts. Also increasingly requested by enterprise security reviews regardless of sector.

Common mistakes

• Promising residency for the primary database while backups and logs sit elsewhere.
• Adding a third-party service late in a project without checking where it processes data.
• Confusing where a company is headquartered with where the data is held.
