Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

Definition: Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG, is a pattern where an AI model retrieves relevant information from an approved knowledge source before generating an answer.

Why it matters

It helps reduce unsupported answers and makes the system more useful for company-specific documents, policies, products and procedures.

What to look for in a real system

The term is only useful when it connects to a real workflow. Buyers should ask what data is involved, what happens when the system is uncertain, how permissions are enforced, how failures are handled, and how the result is measured.
